FBI Director Christopher Wray on Thursday accused those who have access to sensitive material that they should be “more attentive” to the rules, after it was revealed outside Donald Trump in recent weeks that US President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence were about to had this kind of information in their private homes.
“I can’t speak to a specific investigation, of course, but we’ve had a large number of investigations into this abuse for several years,” Wray said at a news conference Thursday, according to CNN.
“Unfortunately, this is a common part of the work of our counterintelligence programs. People should be aware of rules for classified information and how to use it properly. These rules are there for a reason,” said the FBI director at the Justice Department’s headquarters.
For his part, United States Attorney General Merrick Garland chose not to comment on the ongoing investigations following the discovery of this type of classified information in the private homes of President Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump.
Garland limited himself to suggesting that those responsible know the Justice Department very well and that he “completely” trusts them to know how to resolve these issues in “the highest traditions of the Department.”
While Garland has appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to investigate Trump and Robert Hur’s use of classified information to do the same with documents found on Biden, former Vice President Pence’s case will tentatively name another person .
Both Biden, whose documents date back to his time as vice president, and Trump, who refused to turn them over, leading to an August 2022 FBI raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, where more than 20 boxes of the government files found, including 11 sets of classified documents, are being investigated by the Justice Department for misuse of classified material.
