US Vice President Harris attends funeral of police brutality victim

US Vice President Kamala Harris will attend the funeral of black Tire Nichols, who was killed by police violence, in Memphis. After arresting him, he was beaten by five police officers.

Reverend Al Sharpton will speak at the memorial service. Relatives of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, who were killed by police violence, will also attend the ceremony.

police criticism

Criticism of the actions of the public prosecutor’s office and the police has increased in recent weeks. The 29-year-old American was arrested on January 7 for reckless driving. A group of officers then attacked him, and Nichols died of his injuries three days later in the hospital.

Memphis police released video footage of the attack on Friday. Nichols is seen and heard being violently dragged out of his car by black police officers, and then punched and kicked.

dismissal

Five black officers were fired. They are suspected of second-degree murder, comparable to manslaughter in the Netherlands. If found guilty, officers can be sentenced to 15 to 60 years in prison. A sixth officer was dismissed. It is unclear what he suspected.

Three Memphis Fire Department employees were also fired after the incident. These are two paramedics and a driver who violates multiple policies and protocols.
