Two Iranian celebrities sentenced to 10 years in prison for dancing on video.

According to the decision of the Tehran Revolutionary Court in the capital Iranian, Instagram bloggers Astiaj Haghighi and Amir Mohammad Ahmadi were each sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for “incitement to immorality and depravity, staging and conspiracy against national security and propaganda against the regime”.

Iranian human rights activists have also been banned from participating in online social activities and from leaving the country for two years, according to the news agency.

Sources linked to the case told the news agency that they were not allowed to meet the lawyer during the trial, which resulted in the conviction.

On November 1, 2022, security forces arrested this couple at their home in Tehran. The arrest came after they shared a video on social media of them dancing together in a town square.

The decision comes weeks after violent protests broke out in the country after teen Mahsa Amini was arrested by Iran’s vice squad for inappropriately wearing the veil.

According to non-Iranian NGOs, Iranian authorities responded to the protests with heavy policing, resulting in the deaths of nearly 500 people and the arrests of about 20,000, in addition to the execution of four protesters.

Both the United States and the European Union have imposed a series of harsh sanctions on the Iranian government and officials, accusing them of being behind the crackdown.
