A 16-year-old girl died in a shark attack in a river near Perth, Australia.

A 16-year-old girl died in Perth, Australia, after being attacked by a shark in a river. He was pulled out of the water by rescuers, but the wounds on his legs were so severe that it was no longer possible to help.

According to Australian police, the girl was jet skiing with her friends on the Swan River when they believed she had seen a pack of dolphins. The girl jumped into the water to swim with the dolphins.

“The family wasn’t there when it happened, but their friends were there,” a police spokesperson said. “As you can imagine, this is an extremely traumatic event.” It is not yet known what kind of shark it is.

more than a century ago

This isn’t the first time a shark has been spotted in the Swan River, which runs through much of Perth. An attack isn’t unique either, but it’s rare. According to an Australian shark attack database, in 2021 there has only been one attack since 1969. The victim survived and, to the doctors’ surprise, retained both legs.

The last deadly river attack in Perth was a century ago. In 1923, a 13-year-old boy died after being attacked by a bull shark.
