War in Ukraine, Scholz is fed up with the arms race: “It hurts us”

Western countries will continue to supply Ukraine with weapons, but cracks are growing within the coalition that supports Kiev in the war against Russia. Publicly complaining after the latest military supply of tanks was German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who criticized “public competition” between some countries to supply weapons to Volodymyr Zelensky’s men, noting that such competition “harms unity” among Western allies.

“What harms our unity – said the German leader according to Guardian reports – is a public competition to outdo each other in tanks, submarines, planes. Who asks for more? The cohesion in our alliances is our most precious resource» , underlined Scholz, again in a speech at the Bundestag. In recent weeks, important guarantees have arrived from many countries about the weapons to be destined for Ukraine, while Germany has often prevaricated and stopped supplying Kiev.
