Russian ambassador held responsible for MH17 investigation findings

The Russian Ambassador to the Netherlands was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today regarding the MH17 case. Prime Minister Rutte said in the House of Representatives that this was due to the conclusions of the JIT investigative team regarding President Putin’s involvement. The ambassador had to come and give “text and explanation”.

JIT announced today that there are strong indications that Putin has given the green light to use the weapons used to bring down the plane. Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine had requested increased anti-aircraft fire, and the President personally agreed.

A BUK missile system has finally entered the battlefield. One shot down a Malaysia Airlines plane in July 2014. All 298 people on board were killed.

Keep lines of communication open

Coalition party D66 has proposed expelling the Russian ambassador from the country altogether and urged Rutte to urge his colleagues in government to do the same at tomorrow’s European summit.

But Rutte doesn’t feel that way. She says it’s important to keep the lines of communication open with the Kremlin. If the Netherlands expels the Russian ambassador, Moscow will almost certainly do the same to the Dutch ambassador there.
