His name had been circulating since the start of the Qatargate investigation and the first arrests made by the Belgian judiciary. And now Marc Tarabella has also been stopped by the judicial authorities. The MEP was arrested in connection with the Qatargate corruption scandal after the revelations of former European parliamentarian Antonio Panzeri, who decided to collaborate with justice. Tarabella, who has always claimed to be unaware of disputed facts, had already been expelled from the S&D group in the European Parliament. On 2 February, the Eurochamber plenary voted to revoke his parliamentary immunity along with that of Andrea Cozzolino.
The news was confirmed by the Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in a statement: “Several searches took place this morning in the context of a file by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, led by an investigating judge from Brussels, linked to suspicions of public corruption. The first involved a bank vault in Liège belonging to MEP Marc Tarabella. Some Anthisnes town hall offices were also searched. Tarebella was arrested before a hearing. The investigating judge will decide whether he should appear before him in the next few hours.” In the coming hours, the movements of the investigators and the material in the hands of the Belgian magistrates who want to clarify the Qatargate scandal will become clearer.
