The unexpected detonation of a World War II bombrigades attempting to defuse it in western England on Friday caused a massive explosion that was heard several miles away, according to Norfolk County Police, who reported no injuries.
“It was not a planned explosion,” the security forces confirmed, underlining that all military and emergency services at the scene had been “located”.
The artifact found Tuesday near the mouth of the Yare River “exploded shortly after decommissioning work began,” said Norfolk Deputy Police Commissioner Nick Davison.
The bomb was discovered by one of the workers who was building a bridge in the area.
Before the craftsmen started manipulating the one meter long and 250 kilo heavy object, a sand protection wall was erected as a safety measure.
“Our strategy was the safest option. However, there is always a risk of accidental explosion“Added the police squad.
“Fortunately, all personnel have been located and authorities are beginning to assess the damage to the river wall,” Davison said. (EFE)
