The owner of a popular hamburger place believes that the future of her business is at risk because Burger King wants to open a burger joint in the same parking lot as her van. But Megan Israel, owner of Meg’s Grill and Chill in Wickes car park in Bridgend, says she won’t go down without a fight.
Megan, whose business is known locally for selling huge breakfast sandwiches as part of the Monster Sandwich Challenge, says that if Burger King opens in the parking lot, it will have to find a new location. He also joked that he would consider changing the name of his business to “Burger Queen” in protest.
An application to open a Burger King car park in Wickes was first submitted in 2021. The application was then submitted by Triple Jersey Limited and rejected by the board, in part because Megan had approached them with concerns about the deal. potentially competing with it.
We bought a giant sandwich made in the Vieques parking lot that competitors from all over the world come to try, and it didn’t end well.
However, it is now understood that Triple Jersey Limited has submitted a new planning application directly to Senedd. The planning application, submitted on Saturday, October 26, 2022, requests permission for ‘the construction of a Class A3 restaurant and drive-thru (Burger King) along with an associated outdoor covered terrace, enclosed storefront, parking lot landscaping. and associated works”.
Explaining her reaction when she found out about the new planning app, Meghan told WalesOnline: “When Burger King launched the planning app [in 2021] we fought the city council of Bridgend. They were fair and refused the request.
“[But then last year] They told me in November that I had 17 days to receive any objections. [to a new application] c – As you can imagine, some of my customers, followers and locals have objected and complained about this, but as I see it, it’s still happening.
“I said I would follow this application process very closely because it affects my business and earnings, so it’s being watched. I don’t see why I should resign after four years.
“I hope not, because if I do, it means I have to find a new place. It’s not so easy anymore, you can’t show up at the stalls like you used to, you need permits, you need planning, so ideally I should stay, my clients would like me to stay; to be honest, it all depends on the government’s decision. We hope they play ball.”
Local residents have joined Megan in supporting her business from the beginning of the planning application process. One Twitter user said in 2021: “So Burger King is applying to build a website in Bridgend. It is located in a mini roundabout where McDonald’s and KFC are already located, as well as Wickes and two other industrial parks. the car Megan kept a burger truck in for years.
WalesOnline contacted Burger King for more information about its plans to build a cafeteria in Wickes Car Park but did not respond to this request.
