Proteus, the hero dog of the earthquake in Turkey, died of exhaustion

Mexico was one of the countries that immediately sent aid to Turkey, which was destroyed by the severe earthquake that took place on 6 February: Proteo, one of the rescue dogs sent to Turkey, died while working. The German shepherd dog, which specializes in searching and rescuing people under the rubble, died on Saturday (February 11th), exhausted from the colossal efforts to rescue citizens still trapped under collapsed buildings. The sad news was confirmed by the Mexican National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) on social media. but did not specify the cause of death. The post is accompanied by a sentence: “Thanks for your heroic work, Proteus, you have completed your mission”.

“Mexican Army and Air Force members – reading the photo posted on Twitter – are deeply saddened to lose our great comrade dog Proteus. Our brothers in Turkey.” Proteus’ coach wanted to remember his animal in a video he posted on TikTok: “I can only thank you for everything you’ve given me. Unfortunately you won’t be able to come with me yet, but one day we’ll see each other again.” He was one of the rescue dogs sent to Turkey by the Mexican government to support and assist local authorities after the earthquake that killed the person. During these fieldwork days, Proteus collaborated in the rescue of two individuals.
