Mystery in American skies after the case of Chinese spy balloons that triggered tension between Washington and Beijing. A US Army F-16 jet fighter fired an air-to-air missile that shot down an octagonal-shaped flying object near military sites in Michigan above Lake Huron after it was detected as an unidentified object (UFO) by the radar. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was “pleased to announce that it has been removed quickly, safely.”
The Pentagon explained that the object traveled close to US military sites and posed a threat to civilian aviation, as well as being a potential surveillance tool. This is the fourth flying object shot down in February by US or Canadian jets after the Chinese big balloon on February 4.
A senior official in the Joe Biden administration explained that “it was not a military threat to anything on the ground”. It was an “octagonal device with strings hanging from it”, said the same source. It had no visible pod and was unmanned. “We have no indications that he has spying capabilities, but we cannot rule that out,” he said, adding that authorities would try to retrieve him “to find out more”. According to these latest details, this object is indeed the reason why airspace over the state of Montana and Lake Michigan were briefly closed on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, for “national defense” reasons.
Every track is rated, even the most “extreme”. A general in the US Aerospace Forces for North America, Glen Van Herck, said he did not rule out “aliens” or any other explanation, referring to a thorough analysis by intelligence experts. “I’ll let intelligence and counterintelligence speculate – the senior officer replied when asked about the ‘alien’ hypothesis – I’m not ruling anything out”. “Right now – he added – we are taking into account all the clues to identify any type of threat or potential threat, unknown to us, that approaches North America”. A few hours earlier, the New York Times had cited sources in the Biden administration who had privately assured that there was no evidence of “extraterrestrial activity”.
