Israeli forces killed a 14-year-old Palestinian boy on Sunday during an operation in an occupied West Bank city that led to clashes with gunmen, medical officials and witnesses said.
The operation targeted the family of Zakaria Al Zubaidi, former commander of the armed wing of the Al-Fatah movement, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, in Jenin.
Zubaidi was charged with various assaults from 2003 until his escape from Gilboa prison on September 6, 2021. Finally, five days later, he fell into the hands of the Israeli authorities.
A brother of Al Zubaidi, Jibril, a prisoner released by Israel, was re-arrested during that operation, according to Wafa.
The deceased was identified as Qusai Radwan Waked, who was shot in the stomach and taken to Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin in very serious condition before succumbing to his injuries.
Two other youths were seriously injured, the ministry said in a statement collected by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, without providing further details about their health conditions.
An army spokesman said troops sent to Jenin to apprehend a suspected militant were targeted and returned fire.
“We are aware that several gunmen were injured in the firefight,” the spokesman said.
Violence has escalated in the West Bank — one of the areas where Palestinians are seeking statehood — since Israel cracked down last year in response to a series of bombings in the streets of its cities.
