A motorist was found guilty of causing the death of a man who stopped his truck to replace a flat tire. The driver tried to pass him but collided with an oncoming car, resulting in “catastrophic injuries” to the man.

Shane White, 54, killed Mark Rowley, 31, in a crash on the B4269 near Abergavenny at around 5.30pm on March 10, 2021. Rowley was leaning against his Ford Transit van and the driver’s side door when he was hit by the White’s car. Fiat Punto, which collided with a gray Jaguar driven by Ian Curtis.

The trial at Cardiff Crown Court heard that White was driving at 47mph at the time of the collision, failed to brake and tried to ‘push’ the victim’s parked van, but did not see Mr. Curtis until the last moment. Curtis tried to turn left but was hit by White’s Point which also collided with Rowley who died a week later in hospital on 17 March.

Mark Rowley died on 17 March following a car accident near Abergavenny on 10 March.

The officers spoke with White at the scene of the accident. He said: “As I moved to pass the truck, I saw a car coming towards me, which was a silver Jaguar. I tried to slam on the brakes and found I couldn’t. I knocked on the driver’s door. van on the passenger side of my car. I also hit an oncoming Jaguar with the driver’s front wheel.

The defendant, from Coopers Way, Llanfoist, Monmouthshire, was questioned under reprimand on 22 March and said he remembered seeing the van with the hazard lights on and recalled braking “knowing it wouldn’t go”. He added: “I got a little carried away. The driver’s door was open, I went around the driver’s door, but I closed it because a Jaguar was coming. I placed myself between the Jaguar and the van door. and I heard a bang. The defendant said that he could not see any skid marks when he returned to the scene, but claimed that he had skidded, skidded and moved into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting the back of the truck.

After a week-long trial, a jury found White guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. Judge Shoman Khan postponed the sentence until a March 31 hearing.
