Pregnant survives earthquake, returns home with baby and everything falls apart

She was rescued from earthquakes twice in a matter of days: the first time when she was seven months pregnant, and the second time with her newborn baby, who was later in serious condition but appeared to be out of danger. The story comes from Syria and a Syrian citizen, Jindayris, who lives in the county of Afrin, precisely in the northwest of the country. It is one of the regions most affected by the severe earthquake that took place last February 6th.

The story is told by the Syrian American Medical Association (Sams), a front-line medical aid organization in the Middle Eastern country. The woman’s name is Dima, she was seven months pregnant when part of her house collapsed in the earthquake. She sustained only minor injuries and soon gave birth to a son named Adnan at a hospital in Afrin sponsored by the Syrian American Medical Association.

Not knowing where to go (there was no other alternative in Cindayris), the family had to take shelter in the partially destroyed house, which collapsed completely three days later. But mother and son again managed to save themselves. The newborn was critically transported to al-Shifa hospital in Afrin (he was severely dehydrated and suffered from jaundice), while the woman suffered injuries to her lower limbs.

Abdulkarim Hussein al-Ibrahim, the pediatrician who treated the baby, reported that the newborn, contacted by the BBC, responded well to the treatment and underlined that his condition had “improved significantly”. In a video shared by the Syrian American Medical Association on social media, little Adnan is seen resting in the incubator. Dima, on the other hand, has already been discharged from the hospital: she and her husband, Abdul Majid, live in a tent with their nine grandchildren.
