No tiara with world’s largest diamond for Camilla at coronation

Queen Consort of England, Camilla, will be crowned Queen Mary, wife of King George V (1865-1936), at the coronation of King Charles on 6 May. This announcement from Buckingham Palace puts an end to speculation that Camilla plans to use Charles’ grandmother’s so-called Crown of the Queen Mother. Contains the world’s largest apple: Koh-i-Noor.

The speculation angered some in India because the Koh-i-Noor was brought from India as war booty in the 19th century to be offered to the then Queen Victoria by the British East India Company.

In 1937, Queen Charles II, who had died the previous year, Elizabeth’s grandmother, who was her mother, included her in the crown made for her. Today, along with India, Pakistan and Afghanistan also claim Koh-i-Noor.

The tiara that Camilla will wear will be adorned with diamonds belonging to Queen Elizabeth. At his coronation at Westminster Abbey, the crown of England’s royal jewels, St. Edward’s Crown will be presented. This crown was made for his distant predecessor, Charles II, in 1661.

In January, Buckingham Palace announced the coronation schedule of King Charles. The official part of the coronation takes place at Westminster Abbey in London. After the ceremony, Charles and Camilla will appear on the palace balcony along with other members of the royal family. There will also be a concert, street parties and light shows at Windsor Castle on the weekend of May 6 and 7.
