Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro plans to return to Brazil in March. He tells the Wall Street Journal in his first interview since he went to Florida last year.
Bolsonaro said he would return to lead the opposition of left-wing President Lula. In the newspaper, he says he sees himself as the leader of the right-wing movement in Brazil. “There is no one left now.”
He also wants to defend himself against allegations that he instigated the raiding of government buildings in his homeland. Bolsonaro supporters raided the parliament building and presidential palace in the capital, Brasilia, on January 8.
The former president denies any involvement in the attack. “I wasn’t there and they still want to blame me,” he is quoted as saying.
Bolsonaro’s opponents also want criminal prosecution for his actions in the corona epidemic. As president, Bolsonaro described the coronavirus as a “small flu” and rejected large-scale measures. According to the government, about 700,000 people have died in Brazil due to the virus.
Loss
Bolsonaro lost the presidential election last year to left-wing Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He never admitted defeat. He says in the Wall Street Journal that now losing is part of the democratic process. The former president doesn’t want to talk about corruption but says the elections were unfair.
Bolsonaro said he has yet to decide on a possible new presidential candidacy. He describes the job as “much harder than he imagined.” Despite the prospect of arrest, the former Brazilian president is looking forward to his return.
