Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation as First Minister of Scotland

He admitted that he has been through “the hardest hours in the hardest days”, an obvious reference to the pandemic, but that it’s important to “know almost instinctively when the time is right to make room for someone else”.

The announcement comes after the UK government said last month it would block a Scottish law that would make it easier to recognize gender changes.

Sturgeon has held the position of Prime Minister since 2014, when she succeeded Alex Salmond following the ‘no’ victory in Scotland’s divided plebiscite.

Sturgeon had declared his intention to call a second independence referendum in October this year.

However, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Britain’s highest judicial body, ruled last year that the Scottish Home Rule Parliament has no power to hold a consultation on the split without the consent of the British (central) government, on the understanding that it is to “matters reserved for the British Parliament”.

In the first referendum, Scotland voted 55.3% against secession from the rest of the United Kingdom, while 44.7% voted in favor of independence.
