Frankfurt Airport largely flat due to Lufthansa IT failure

Due to a major IT outage at German airline Lufthansa, all flights to Frankfurt Airport have been canceled or diverted. Also, no Lufthansa flights depart from Germany’s largest airport. Check-in and boarding systems are not working.

Frankfurter Allgemeine writes that the malfunction may have been caused by damaged fiber optic cables while working on a construction site in Frankfurt. This is causing disruptions for Telekom customers, particularly at the airport north of the city, but possibly also at the airport west of Frankfurt. Fixing the wires will take until Wednesday afternoon.

Inbound flights will be diverted to Nuremberg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. The Frankfurt Airport website advises passengers to check the status of their flight online. They should also expect additional travel time depending on the airport and check in as early as possible.

Lufthansa says on Twitter they are working “in full swing” on a solution. The airline advises passengers booking domestic flights to take the train.
