A disabled car caused extensive and prolonged delays on the westbound M4 near Newport.
The incident caused the road to be temporarily closed at the 27 High Cross intersection until the last lane reopened at 2:30 pm. Travel time from Junction 24 to Junction 27 at 3pm was approximately 20 minutes.

Delays of approximately 10 minutes remain between Junction 23A at Magor and Junction 26 at Malpas Road. The average speed is around 20 km/h.

Bus service says delays to be expected
Shortly after 3pm, Newport Bus said delays on some services were expected due to what it described as a “highway accident”. At the moment, the company does not specify which services it applies to.
Delays are expected in some services due to the accident on the motorway. More updates will be added as more information becomes available.

Currently, delays are approximately 15 minutes from Magor westbound to Junction 26 Malpas. The images below show the latest developments in Caerleon to the west (top image) and Christchurch to the west.

Since the third lane at Junction 27 reopened at 2:30 pm, congestion has decreased significantly. Waiting time from Coldra to Tredegar Park on the M4 is now 20 minutes.

There is also congestion on the A4051 for ten minutes between Pillmawr Road and the A4042.

Now all lanes are open, traffic jams remain
All lanes on the M4 have now reopened, but congestion remains from Coldra at Junction 24 to Tredegar Park at Junction 28. According to AA updates, average speeds are still below 10mph and delays are still more than 40 minutes from the end of the queue.

According to Traffic Wales, the incident was described as a car breakdown. From 24 Coldra to 27 High Cross, traffic is very congested. According to the Inrix traffic control system, traffic is still at a standstill.
