The Suriname National Party (NPS) withdrew from the ruling coalition today. NPS President Gregory Russia said at a press conference. This has no direct consequences for the government, as the two largest parties still form the majority.
The resigning Social Democratic Party had little involvement in government decisions. Many decisions were taken by President Santokhi (VHP) and Vice President Brunswijk (ABOP) without consulting the coalition partner, news website Starnieuws reported.
Without the NPS, the coalition still consists of the VHP and ABOP/PL, a bipartisan coalition. Social liberal Santokhi’s VHP party is the largest party and holds the most important posts such as the presidency, foreign policy and finance.
Ronnie Brunswijk’s ABOP, the second party in the coalition, was given influential tasks such as natural resources, judiciary and police. NPS previously had the Education, Science and Culture and Spatial Planning and Environment missions, but is putting them back at the President’s disposal.
The NPS exists as an independent faction in the National Assembly, the Surinamese parliament.
