Russia, Putin chooses Surovkin again: another change in military leadership

New changing of the guard in Russia’s military leaders caused by the war in Ukraine. The Moscow Air Defense Forces are back under the command of General Sergey Surovkin. According to Tass, citing Defense Ministry sources, the air defense forces are no longer subordinated to the ground forces, but have returned to the command of the aerospace forces. Since 2017, recalls the Ukrainian media, the Aerospace Forces were headed by Surovikin.

The general himself had been appointed commander of the war against Kiev in October 2022. Under his leadership, massive air strikes on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure were launched and Russia lost the previously occupied city of Kherson. In January, command of operations in Ukraine was assigned by Vladimir Putin to the Chief of General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov. Now, instead, a partial return to Surovkin: confusion reigns around the Kremlin.
