During a visit to South Wales, William and Kate met the wife and children of a man who died in a road accident. The Prince and Princess of Wales visited today ahead of St David’s Day, making a number of commitments to support mental health initiatives and meet with local communities.

As part of the trip, the couple visited the Welsh Air Ambulance base in Llanelli. There they caught up with Laura Davies and their two children, Sophia, 9, and Owen, 11, at a private gathering in the charity’s new family room. The room was inspired by a family tragedy.

Mrs. Davies said: “My husband and daughter Sophia were involved in a car accident on July 8, 2021. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services that day, we tragically lost Arvel in an accident. Arvel was a very, very special person and having a room like this named after Arvel and being recognized by Prince William and Princess Catherine is testament to how special he was.

“I think it’s great that Prince William and Princess Catherine are joining in today’s visit. It means a lot to the kids, it’s a lasting legacy for them of how special Dad was.”

William and Kate started the day with a walk through the new garden being built at the Brynawel Rehabilitation Center near Pontyclun. The site will include a collection of lots where people can have their own space to learn and grow their own products. You’ll sit next to a shared herb and sensory garden, clay kitchen and interactive learning space.

The Royal Trust brought together national and local organizations to support the design and construction, as well as provide funds, tools, plants, seeds and gardening materials. They then visited a community leisure center to hear how sport and exercise can support mental health and wellbeing, before ending the journey at the Wales Air Ambulance charity in Llanelli.
