Kobe Bryant’s widow has settled for millions in a lawsuit over leaked photos of the basketball legend who died in 2020. The images showed the wreckage of the helicopter where the bodies of his wife and daughter were found. Vanessa Bryant received approximately $29 million (more than €28 million) in compensation.
Kobe Bryant crashed in a helicopter near Los Angeles in January 2020. He, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven other inmates were killed.
Rescuers who arrived at the scene took photos of the wreckage and bodies and forwarded them to their colleagues. Vanessa Bryant later sued Los Angeles County for “serious emotional damage.”
victory
Last summer, Vanessa Bryant was promised $15 million (14 million euros) by a jury. This amount was increased in consideration of possible compensation for the couple’s three surviving daughters. Another surviving relative also received millions.
During the trial, Bryant said he was constantly afraid of his daughters finding the photos on social media. “We hope their victory in the case and this settlement will put an end to these practices,” Bryant’s lawyer said of the settlement.
new legislation
California now has a law that prohibits emergency responders from posting footage of an accident or crime without permission.
Bryant was considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He played his entire career for the Los Angeles Lakers and became a five-time NBA champion with that team. The cause of the crash remained unclear for a long time, but the investigation eventually revealed that the pilot of the plane had flown up a hill through the fog.
