American who spent more than 38 years in prison officially declared innocent

A judge found innocent of an American man who had been wrongfully imprisoned for more than 38 years.

Maurice Hastings was convicted of raping and murdering a woman in 1983, but a DNA test in 2021 determined that the perpetrator was another man. He was released last year but is now officially declared innocent.

Hastings maintained his innocence during his imprisonment. In 2000, she requested a semen test that was on the victim’s body but was never tested. Hastings’ request was denied, but thanks to the efforts of an advocacy group, DNA testing was done in 2021.

The DNA apparently belonged to Kenneth Packnett, who was serving a prison sentence for raping and kidnapping a woman. Packnett died in his cell in 2020 and was therefore unable to appear in court, but Hastings, who was 69 at the time, was released.

The prosecutor said Hastings, now officially declared innocent, could seek compensation. Hastings himself was particularly relieved. He later said, “It means a lot to me. “I am happy with the judge’s decision and the apologies.” “Everything was great today. I am ready to move on with my life.”
