The order was issued by White House executive and budget director Shalanda Young, according to the TV channel, in a memorandum released Monday that is addressed to all government agencies and their private contractors.
Federal authorities have 30 days after receiving the regulation to remove TikTok apps from devices and ban the use of this social network on their devices for security reasons.
In doing so, President Joe Biden’s administration complies with a bill passed by Congress late last year that would require federal agencies to terminate TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, over fears that user data could leak to the US. Chinese government.
US officials have expressed concern that the Chinese government could pressure ByteDance to release information it collects from TikTok users, which CNN says could be used for intelligence or disinformation purposes.
They are calling for an investigation into TikTok in the US for alleged Chinese espionage.
“A Political Theatre”
The TV channel said TikTok spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter issued a statement describing the ban as “little more than political theater”.
“The TikTok ban on federal devices was passed in December without any discussion, and unfortunately this approach has served as a model for other governments around the world,” Oberwetter wrote in the text.
“When it comes to addressing TikTok-related national security concerns that go beyond government apparatuses, we hope that Congress will seek solutions that do not lead to censorship of the votes of millions of Americans,” he added.
Also this Monday, the Canadian government announced that starting today it will ban federal employees from using the TikTok app on their official cell phones because they pose an “unacceptable” risk to their privacy and safety.
Similarly, the European Commission issued its own ban on official devices last week, citing safety concerns.
