Meloni in India, bilateral with Modi. Energy, raw materials, defence: the dossiers

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s mission to India began this morning with a welcome by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Armed Forces Honor Guard at the Presidential Palace in New Delhi. “I am very happy to be here, I thank Prime Minister Modi for the splendid reception”, said Meloni who underlined that this is the “first bilateral trip to Asia since the beginning of his mandate, on the 75th anniversary of bilateral relations, which I am sure We’re going to get stronger.”

The prime minister will speak at the opening of the seventh edition of the Raisina Dialogue conference, an important geopolitical and economic event on the Asian subcontinent. In fact, the economic dossiers are the most awaited. After the tensions surrounding the Marò case, relations between Italy and India have improved considerably in recent years: trade between the two countries in 2022 reached a record 14.9 billion euros with a surplus in favor of India of 5. 2 billion.

In recent days, the Indian press had emphasized the possibility that a deal on defense could emerge from the summit. Energy, raw materials, scientific cooperation are other important dossiers on the table. At the geopolitical level, the Raisina Dialogue appointment will be an opportunity to illustrate Italian foreign policy and its positioning in the Indo-Pacific also before several G20 foreign ministers.
