Almost half of Argentina was left without electricity for hours due to the fire that broke out last night. The fire broke out along the coast, paralyzing the national electricity grid, the BBC reported. The capital, Buenos Aires, and other major cities were affected.
According to the information obtained, important power lines were damaged after the fire in an open area. Then a nuclear power plant failed. The daily Buenos Aires Times reports that at least 20 million people were affected by the power outage. Argentina has about 45 million inhabitants.
The power outage started at 16:30 local time (20:30 Dutch time). In some areas, life came to a virtual standstill. Traffic lights no longer work, shops can no longer cool their products, and air conditioning systems have also failed. It’s summer in the South American country and it’s currently battling a heat wave: it was around 35 degrees in many places yesterday.
A few hours after the blackout, the lights slowly came back on in Buenos Aires.
arson or not
The Ministry of Economy asked local authorities to investigate. This should show if it was arson.
Argentina has experienced greater power outages. In 2019, there was a power outage across the country. Tens of millions of people were left without electricity in Argentina and neighboring Uruguay.
