The iconic Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen was destroyed and painted in the colors of the Russian flag: horizontal stripes of white, blue and red. The statue at the entrance to Denmark’s capital’s harbor was cleaned this morning before tourists could take a photo. The monument, which is one of the symbols of the city, has been destroyed frequently in the past. Inaugurated in 1913, the 1.25-metre-high and 175-kilogram statue depicts the protagonist of a fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.
“Obviously we are investigating, investigating to find out who did it, when and how,” said the police chief in Ritzau. The Ukrainian flag flies over several Danish buildings these days, as a sign of solidarity with Kiev, on the first anniversary of the invasion of Russia at the behest of Vladimir Putin.
