In Belgium, four Dutchmen were arrested for finding large quantities of cocaine in the port of Zeebrugge. Five tons of cocaine worth several hundred million euros was hidden in a fruit container.
The four suspects are between 19 and 25 years old. Police released the fifth prisoner. It is still unclear whether the detainees were involved in “theft” or otherwise implicated in the crime. Thieves are usually young suspects tasked with removing drugs from containers.
More cocaine finds
While the number of cocaine found in the port of Rotterdam fell sharply last year, more cocaine than ever was found in Antwerp. In January, Belgian customs therefore announced that they will be working more closely with the Netherlands this year. The Port of Antwerp will also deploy additional staff and new equipment to screen the containers.
The Dutch being arrested after finding drugs in Belgium is no exception. Ten people were arrested after nearly 4,000 kilos of cocaine were found in Belgium last month. Nine of them were Dutch.
