In this month’s video, Pope Francis offered “victims of abuse,” stating that “the Church cannot try to hide the tragedy of abuse, whatever it may be,” and instead “must be an example to help solve them, to bring them to light in society and in families”.
“Forgiveness is necessary, but not enough. Asking for forgiveness is good for the victims, but they must be at the center,” the pope said in the video message.
He added that the pain and mental damage the victims may experience “starts to heal as they find answers, concrete actions to fix the horrors and prevent them from happening again.”
To this end, the pope assured: “It is the Church that must provide safe spaces for victims, accompany them psychologically and protect them.
He concluded his message with the prayer of the faithful “for those who suffer from the abuses received by the members of the ecclesial community”, so that they may find in the Church itself a concrete answer to their pain and suffering.
In 2022, Pope Francis’ Church published the text “Vedemecum: On Some Procedural Issues in Cases of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Clerics”. Handbook for Lawyers and Lawyers, which “aims to help and guide step by step anyone who considers it necessary to find out the truth in the field of crime (sexual abuse of minors)”.
