A nightmare bulletin. NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US Army General Christopher Cavoli, said that Russia has lost over 200,000 troops since the start of the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, describing the scale of the war as “incredible”. The general added that more than 1,800 Russian officers were killed or wounded, figures revealed in conversations with the German magazine Der Spiegel. Cavoli also said that Russia has lost “much more” than 2,000 large tanks and that its army fires an average of 23,000 artillery shells a day.
The UK Ministry of Defense had previously released an estimate that Russian military and mercenary groups likely lost between 175,000 and 200,000 people in Ukraine, with a peak of 60,000 killed. Prisoners recruited by the Kremlin-backed private mercenary group Wagner suffered a casualty rate of up to 50%, according to one report. A failure compared to the lightning operation scheduled for February 2022 for Vladimir Putin’s men.
