Beijing’s Plan in the National Congress: When Taiwan Becomes Chinese

The National People’s Congress, the legislative branch of the Chinese parliament, officially opened in Beijing on Sunday. which should strengthen President Xi Jinping’s grip on business and society. Prime Minister Li Keqiang has set this year’s growth target at “about 5%” after ending virus checks that have kept millions at home and sparked protests. The 2,977-member PNA (National People’s Congress) general assembly is the year’s high-profile event, but its job is limited to approving decisions taken by the ruling Communist Party and presenting official initiatives.

China must also implement the Communist Party’s policy “to resolve the Taiwan issue, adhering to the ‘One China’ principle and the 1992 Consensus.” Premier Li Keqiang, in his opening speech at the National People’s Congress, said the country “will take resolute measures to oppose Taiwan’s independence and promote reunification.” In this regard, he added, “we must promote the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait and the peaceful development of relations between the parties, and advance relations and the process of peaceful reunification of China.”
