In Bakhmut the situation is “hell”. This is the description given by Volodymyr Nazarenko, the Ukrainian senior commander, in an interview with the newspaper Kyiv24, in which he added, however, that the front line is stabilized and Russian forces remain on the periphery. This was reported by the Guardian, adding that Russian forces now occupy areas on 3 sides of the city, i.e. east, north and south, and there is only one road connecting the city to Ukrainian-controlled territory. However, the Washington-based thinktank Institute for the Study of War said the Russians were unlikely to encircle the city any time soon, as their progress was still “slow and gradual”.
Speaking to Bild am Sonntag, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksij Reznikov said that in Bakhmut “Russian losses amount to 500 dead and wounded a day”. Russian soldiers are just “cannon fodder” in Moscow’s “meat grinder tactics”, Reznikov said.
As heavy fighting continues in and around Bakhmut and the besieged city continues, Russian Wagner group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a video message: “If Wagner’s private mercenary force withdraws from Bakhmut, the entire front it will crumble… beyond. Wagner is the cement… we are drawing the whole Ukrainian army to us, breaking and destroying it”. That’s what he said
