Biden underwent successful cancer surgery in February

United States President Joe Biden underwent surgery on Feb. 16 for a skin lesion on the chest that turned out to be cancer, which was successfully completed, the White House reported Friday.

According to White House Doctor Kevin O’Connor’s statement, the procedure took place the day Biden underwent his physical exam. The White House said at the time that the president was “in good health” and “fit” to perform his duties.

Friday’s statement explains that Biden had a “skin lesion” removed from his chest that day at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. The removed tissue was biopsied and contained carcinoma cells “as expected”.

All cancerous tissue was “successfully” removed, according to the president’s doctor, who also explained that the entire affected area was treated with “electrodissection,” where the tissue is dried at high frequency.

The doctor emphasized in this White House report that basal cell carcinoma lesions “have no tendency to spread or metastasize,” as do more “serious” cancers such as melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma.

However, he acknowledged that these types of cancerous lesions can get bigger and cause bigger problems that require intervention beyond surgical removal.

The biopsy area has “healed well” according to the medical report, which adds that upcoming medical exams will include dermatological exams.
