Peruvian soldiers drowned trying to disperse protests

Six soldiers drowned in southeastern Peru. According to the military, they tried to reach the city of Juli by swimming a river in the Andes to disperse a violent protest there.

In July, a police station and a courthouse were set on fire on Saturday. Five people were injured in the violent protests. According to the military, the soldiers initially wanted to reach the city over a bridge a day later, but this would be blocked by the demonstrators.

The Defense Department said in a statement that the soldiers’ deaths could be partly attributed to the “hostile attitude” of the protesters.

Dozens of people died in the protests

Since the beginning of December, there has been a crisis situation in Peru. Protests and riots erupted after President Castillo was removed from office. Castillo himself had recently tried to marginalize Parliament. After the deposition of Castillo, who came from the Andes, it was primarily the indigenous people who revolted.

Castillo has been replaced by Vice President Boluarte, but the demonstrators are not happy about it. They are calling for pro-poor reforms. They also want Castillo reinstated. Violent protests killed 64 people, most of them civilians.
