Congress again rejects project to anticipate elections in Peru

Peru’s Constitutional Commission on Tuesday rejected a new initiative that appeared to bring forward parliamentary elections at the end of this year, one of the main demands of anti-government protests that have claimed the lives of 76 people since December.

With 12 votes against, 9 votes in favor and 0 abstentions, the parliamentary committee rejected the bill, which bundled 16 bills and provided for new elections to be held in December 2023.

The Constitutional Commission began debating early elections after the parliament’s plenary ratified its decision to reconsider the proposal in early March.

The plenary session of the Peruvian Congress confirmed its decision to re-analyze the possible progress of the country’s parliamentary elections, after rejecting a request for a review of this measure, which it had approved at the end of the previous legislature on February 17. turned down.

Election anticipation is one of the main demands of the anti-government protests that began in Peru last December, but so far Congress has failed to reach an agreement to approve initiatives proposing elections for 2023 or 2024, two of the executive branch and another two from different factions, including Fujimorism.
