In Vienna, the police are strongly present in churches and other places of worship. The Austrian secret service has indications of an “Islamic threat” to churches and other places of worship.
“Our precautionary measures affect not only Christian churches, but also places of worship of different faiths,” the police said on Twitter. Police did not say how long additional security would be required.
A police spokesperson told Radio Vienna that police officers are equipped with bulletproof helmets, vests and assault rifles. They will carry out surveillance activities and they will also conduct road traffic controls.”
Attack 2020
In 2020 Vienna was attacked by an Islamic State sympathizer. He killed four people with an automatic weapon before being shot by the police. 22 people were injured in the attack.
Eventually, the Austrian police made several arrests for this attack.
