The job would annul the chancellor’s ‘golden freedom’

Labor has vowed to end Jeremy Hunt’s “gold-plated rebate” for the highest earners, while the chancellor has defended his multibillion-dollar tax cut for retirement savings. Read what this means for Wales here.

Hunt said removing the tax-free cap on lifetime pensions included in its budget was necessary to keep doctors working as the NHS spends billions on agency staff.

But Labor has said it would remove the “pension burden to 1%” if it comes to power, amid criticism from economists the “extremely wasteful” measure would cost £80,000 per worker.

Wales team announcement live

Later today, Warren Gatland will announce his final Wales squad for the 2023 Six Nations ahead of Saturday’s match against France in Paris.

There is no bonus on John Lewis

The John Lewis Partnership was at a loss of £234m for the year and said it could not pay staff their traditional bonuses.

Sharon White, president, said it was a “difficult” time. He insists the balance sheet remains strong at £1bn in cash, but there are certainly concerns about the future of what is often considered Britain’s best retailer.

Police warn of Newport Street closures

Gwent reported that the Newport shopping street is currently closed between Kingsway Junction and Gilligan’s Island.

There are detours that can cause traffic jams. The statement read: “Avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your trip.”

Mark Drakeford will visit France for three days

Mark Drakeford will spend three days in France meeting energy and industrial companies investing in Wales.

According to the Welsh government, this will include a trip to Paris and the prime minister will also host a reception to mark the launch of Wales in France, a year-long celebration of cultural, business and sporting events aimed at strengthening existing ties and create new ties between the two countries.
