“No one is.” Scholz warns Putin: what can happen to the Tsar

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The International Criminal Court is the right institution to investigate war crimes,” Scholz said during his visit to Tokyo, as reported by German media. “No one is above the law,” Scholz said, noting that the German government has always made sure that the International Criminal Court is given the importance it deserves.

In an interview with CNN, the chief prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan, explained that the Russian president could be tried for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, although Moscow believes that he is not subject to the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Khan pointed to the historic trials of Nazi war criminals, former Yugoslav President Slobodan Miloševic and former Liberian leader Charles Taylor as examples of seemingly untouchable figures facing justice. “All of them were powerful individuals and yet they ended up in court,” Khan said.

The decision by the International Criminal Court has already made history, with Putin becoming the first head of state of a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to receive an arrest warrant, Khan said.
