He hears the door knocking, but when he opens the door, he finds himself in front of an almost three-metre crocodile biting his hip. A close encounter between a 56-year-old man and an alligator in Florida, one of the approximately 1.3 million alligators living in the US state, ended with wounds that healed in a few days and with great fear.
It happened in Daytona Beach: The injured man’s name is Scot Hollingsworth, watching TV with his wife when he heard the knock on the door and got up to check if anyone was outside the house. “I jumped up and headed for the door – he told the local press – I bent down to turn on the lights in the entrance when I opened it”. At this point the crocodile attacked him: “It was just a shock – he continues – that I suspect I surprised the crocodile as much as he surprised me”. Hollingsworth was bitten in the upper thigh and was taken to a hospital where he was thankfully treated for minor injuries.
The animal was put under pressure by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and it’s certainly gotten worse. Florida has a large and rapidly increasing population of alligators. Attacks on the local population are rare. An 85-year-old woman was killed by a crocodile last month while trying to protect her dog from attack.
