An Italian child may also be among the 16,000 minors allegedly deported from Ukraine to Russia by Vladimir Putin’s troops for inclusion in Moscow’s “re-education programmes”. At least, that’s the fear of the two grandparents who launched a public call to find out the whereabouts of Roman, a 6-year-old nephew born of a marriage between their son and a Ukrainian woman.
Born in Veneto, the little boy moved with his mother to Donetsk in Donbass for five years after his parents divorced. Grandparents have not seen him since, but continued to receive updates via video calls. “Despite the interest of the Italian consul in Ukraine and various attempts by us with the help of local politicians – they reported to Ansa – the mother’s condition worsened further and she completely lost contact for about a year. We do not know where and with whom Roman lives. We’re applying to the Convention.” In light of the deportation charges brought against Vladimir Putin by the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the two grandparents fear that the child has been deported to Russia: They claim that the woman’s “phone numbers” have been “blocked”.
