More than three million workers sought for renewable energies: EU deal on initial training

The European Union needs three and a half million workers in the renewable energy sector to ensure the achievement of its climate targets for 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. With the support of the European Commission, we have established a large-scale skills partnership to equip workers with the skills necessary to manufacture and manage new technologies. This will be done primarily through the creation of career paths with the involvement of competent national authorities, educational institutions and training platforms. Particular attention will also be given to the inclusion of more women in clean energy-related work sectors.

According to Commission estimates, if there are around 1.3 million people operating in renewable energy in the EU in 2020, this number will only increase as greener energy solutions become more common than ever before. Considering all sectors involved, achieving the RePowerEu targets will require the creation of more than 3.5 million jobs by 2030 in areas such as biomethane and photovoltaic solar energy, where each of them is expected to need over one million workers by 2030. “Retraining and retraining workers in all industrial ecosystems is crucial to our bilateral transition goal,” said Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market. According to Employment and Social Rights Commissioner Nicolas Schmit, “well-trained workers are essential for many jobs created in the renewable energy ecosystem.” The new partnership will ensure that the industry remains competitive and in line with the evolving demands of the energy market.”

Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson also wanted to underline the importance of the partnership in contributing to “the massive deployment of renewable energies we need for the transition to clean energy”, adding that this project “will also help us meet the RePowerEu targets for 2030”. in renewable energy”. Following commitments in other industrial ecosystems, this 15th partnership is a concrete implementation of the Skills Pact, the flagship initiative for sustainable competitiveness, social justice and resilience under the Skills Agenda for Europe. It will support its efforts to ensure that at least 60% of all adults participate in education each year by 2030. Since the launch of the Convention (July 2020), more than a thousand organizations have committed to retraining more than six million people in Europe.
