Kiev calls Beijing. Zelensky is closely following ongoing peace talks between the main Chinese government and the Kremlin. According to rumors, Kiev offered Xi Jinping to mediate with the Russian invader. So far, however, the answer has not yet come. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had “invited” China to a dialogue and was “waiting for a response”. He let it be known that Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Moscow to seal his alliance with Vladimir Putin. “We offer China” cooperation to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, Zelensky told a news conference. “We invite you to dialogue, we await your response.” The Ukrainian president added that he “received signals, but nothing concrete”. Previously, the Ukrainian presidency had made known that contacts are underway for a phone call between Xi Jinping and Zelensky but that there is still nothing concrete.
NATO also expressed its opinion on the possibility of a dialogue between China and Ukraine. “A conversation between Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is likely, but I have no expectations about it.” Alessandro Politi, director of the NATO Defense College Foundation, told LaPresse, noting that it is the Kiev leader who wants the conversation, “and I don’t think the US is very happy about that.” As for the possible outcome of the phone call, “when you set up conversations like that, even through Sherpas, you never know how it’s going to turn out when you play the hand of poker,” concludes Politi.
