About 6,000 Wagner group mercenaries are fighting in Bakhmut, the center of the war between Ukraine and Russia in recent weeks. The data was provided to Congress by the head of the American Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley: “The Russians are conducting combat operations now, especially in Bakhmut. There are probably around 6,000 full-fledged mercenaries and perhaps another 20 or 30,000 recruits, many of whom come from prisons. And they are taking a huge amount of losses in the Bakhmut area. The Ukrainians are inflicting death and destruction on these men. The battle for the city turned into a massacre for the Russians. The Ukrainians are presenting a very effective defense, which cost the Russians dearly. In the last 21 days, the Russians have made no progress on Bakhmut.” Milley’s words were delivered before the House Armed Services Committee along with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
