Türkiye’s parliament officially approved Finland’s accession to NATO. Turkey is the last NATO country to ratify.
Turkey’s agreement did not come as a surprise. Finnish President Niinistö met with his Turkish counterpart, Erdogan, earlier this month. Erdogan later said that Finland has taken concrete steps to fulfill the commitments included in the agreement between the countries.
Finland applied to join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine. Sweden has done the same, but this country is still waiting for approval from Türkiye and Hungary. Türkiye has so far refused. Erdogan said Sweden did not comply with the extradition request of 120 Kurdish PKK members and YPG fighters.
Tensions between Turkey and Sweden escalated earlier this year when a far-right Danish-Swedish activist burned a Quran outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. The demonstrators also waved the flags of the PKK, the militant Kurdish movement with which Turkey has been at odds for decades, in front of the embassy.
