A talented teenager from Barry’s school goes to the United States for a “space school”, where students from around the world prepare for a possible career in the aerospace industry. Osian Carney, 18, a sixth grader at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg in Barry, has been selected to participate in the United Space School Summer 2023 in Houston, Texas.

The program is run by the Foundation for International Space Education, and Osian and 49 other students design a fictional mission to Mars and learn from experts at a space center near NASA’s base in Texas. Ossian said he was “very looking forward to it” as he has always been interested in space.

“I had a lot of space books growing up,” he said, adding, “I applied on the last day before the closing date, so I wasn’t 100% sure I would make it in. I wrote an essay and sent my resume. then I did an interview and they told me he would come. All my friends said to me: “Very good”.

In the interview, Osian shared his passion for skateboarding with the interviewers and told them his ideas for zero gravity skateboarding in space. As part of the two-week program, students spend time at NASA’s Houston base, read lectures by experts on living in zero gravity, power plants and the laws of space, and launch simulated missions into space.

Osian’s mum, Gwenda Carney, said: “Oh my god I’m so proud obviously. He’s a teenager from Barrie who goes to Welsh school, not usually something on the horizon.

Osian only turned around at the last moment.

“I think this is a competition: students are taken from 25 countries around the world. You’re so young that you’re choosing a career, so what experiences can we find to give you an idea of what working life with maths and physics is like? That was just an idea.”

Ossian hasn’t ruled out a career as an astronaut, but Gwenda said she would be “terrified” if he went into space, adding: “There’s a whole range of different careers and people involved in planning these missions, even the obvious ones.” scientists… there are different careers, an astronaut perhaps!”
