Polish peasants fighting against Zelensky

A sensational protest against Volodymyr Zelensky could take place in Europe’s most pro-Ukrainian country today. The leader of the Kiev government is actually expected to conclude a bilateral agreement with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, in Warsaw and thank the country that has openly sided with Ukraine, albeit at the cost of breaking, since the first day of the Russian occupation. Historical alliance with Hungary. But meeting Zelensky in addition to the authorities may be a crowd of angry Polish farmers.

The anger of the farmers is due to the large volumes of Ukrainian goods entering Poland, which, according to trade organizations, has caused the prices of local products to drop. In particular, companies in the wheat sector accuse the Minister of Agriculture, Henryk Kowalczyk, of not implementing the agreement signed with the farmers to solve the problem that the sector is facing with Ukrainian wheat filling the Polish market.

The problem stems from the so-called ‘green lanes’ that the EU created last year to facilitate grain exports from war-ravaged Ukraine. Since then, the massive influx of cheap Ukrainian wheat has ended in central European countries, with obvious negative effects on tariffs and thus farmers’ pockets.

The EU has also recently launched support of over 56m euros for Bulgarian, Polish and Romanian farmers affected by Ukrainian competition. However, these measures were not enough to calm the anger of the workers.

Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and the farmers’ movement recently signed a joint agreement on measures to stop the excessive flow of grain from Ukraine and compensate producers for losses. However, according to farmers, the agreement has not been implemented and agricultural imports from Ukraine are also increasing. This is why the villagers chose to take to the streets in Warsaw on the occasion of the bilateral agreement with the Ukrainian leader to protest the Warsaw line accused by the villagers of not serving the interests of their own people.
