UN keeps 3,300 workers at home in Afghanistan to protest ban on women

The United Nations kept more than 3,300 Afghan men and women working for the organization in Afghanistan at home for two days. The organization therefore protests the Taliban’s decision to ban Afghan women from working at the UN.

The UN Security Council opposed the resolution in an emergency session and called on the Taliban to withdraw. About 3,900 people work for the UN in Afghanistan, including 3,300 Afghans.

The position of women continues to deteriorate

After the Taliban came to power in August 2021, the position of women in Afghanistan came under increasing pressure, despite the Taliban’s promises to adopt less strict policies than when they came to power in 1996-2001.

Girls are barred from entering secondary schools, female students are no longer wanted in universities, and Afghan women were banned from working in foreign aid organizations at the end of last year. The female UN staff was later donated, but ended earlier this week.

The UN then decided to keep all Afghan personnel in Afghanistan at home. “Afghan women will not be replaced by men,” a UN spokesperson said. Replacing women with foreign aides is also not an option for the UN.

More than 28 million people are in need of help in Afghanistan this year. According to the UN, these include 20 million people who are badly starving and 6 million who are “one step away from hunger”. The organization wants to allocate 4.2 billion euros for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan this year, but only 195 million euros have been funded so far.

The Taliban came to power in the summer of 2021 after 20 years of US military presence in Afghanistan. We then made this explanatory video about the Islamic group:
