Israel bombs Gaza and Lebanon: new dramatic crisis in the Middle East

The Israeli army carried out air strikes on the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, following attacks by more than thirty rockets fired by Palestinian groups.


According to an Israeli army spokesman, the attack on Hamas positions today came after the Palestinian Islamist formation launched 44 rockets against Israel. He added that one hit a house in Sderot but there were no casualties: 14 fell in an open area, 8 got caught, 12 fell into the sea and 9 into the Gaza Strip. The military has asked residents of the village around the Strip to stay in shelters until further notice.

A few hours later, violent explosions occurred near a Palestinian refugee camp in the Tire region of southern Lebanon. According to the Israeli army command, the attacks were aimed at positions of the Islamic group Hamas. Reporting how Israeli aviation hit 10 areas of Hamas, Tel Aviv explains, “The Palestinian movement will not be allowed to operate from within Lebanon.”

This raid is the largest Israel has launched on Lebanese soil since the 2006 war, and it takes place just as Italian defense minister Guido Crosetto is in the land of the cedars.

The United Nations Response Force (UNIFIL), stationed in southern Lebanon, called on “all parties to cease all action” on both sides of the border.
