China begins three-day military exercise after Taiwan president’s visit to America

China begins three-day military exercises around Taiwan. The exercise took place shortly after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen’s visit to the United States.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense reported that 71 aircraft and 9 ships on behalf of China crossed the center line in the Taiwan Strait during the exercise. The line is the unofficial border between Taiwan and China, which Beijing does not recognize.

A spokesperson for the Chinese military told state broadcaster CGTN that the exercises, including those in the Taiwan Strait, were designed as a “serious warning” following provocations by Taiwanese “separatists” and “foreign powers”.

sanctions

China has already reacted angrily to Tsai’s visit to the US. Among other things, sanctions were announced against the Ronald Reagan Library in California, where Tsai spoke with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday.

McCarthy is the second most senior leader in the United States, after President Biden and Vice President Harris. He was the highest-ranking US politician to meet with a Taiwanese leader on US soil since 1979.

The Chinese government saw the visit as a provocation. Beijing does not recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty and considers the island of more than 23 million inhabitants a province to be “reunited to the homeland”.

Great Army Exercise

The previous high-level contact between Taiwan and the United States led to China conducting an unprecedented military exercise around the island. In August 2022, Chinese warships passed Taiwan for several days after the then Speaker of the Assembly Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei. Chinese missiles were also fired at the island for the first time.

Thus, the meeting between Tsai and McCarthy again leads to military exercises.
